After 20 over years since the last time we held it

VAS is reorganizing the volleyball (indoor) men & women teams

in preparation for the 2013 & 2015 SEA Games

It's time to show SSC that we are not the lousiest sport in the contingent

Yes, we may not be even close to winning a medal now

We may not have your support

We may not have your fundings

We may not have FTs in our team

What we need is the support and cheering from our local Singaporeans

They combed the whole tekong but couldn't find him on that night

Pulau Tekong True Fact

"It is a well-known fact that Pulau Tekong has a number of ghosts. Some of you readers may have read or heard about the ghost at Charlie Company at the old basic military camp I. Unfortunately, some versions that I read or heard have been distorted over the years.

Here, I hope to set the record straight. Instructors and trainees of Charlie Company, Infantry Training Depot during the March-June 1983 period can vouch for my version of the story. It is NOT my intention to revive hurtful memories especially for the bereaved family or to blame anyone, but purely to narrate facts as they had happened.

The starting point of this true story should be the 16 Km route march about 18 years ago. Before the march, the Officer Commanding of the company asked the trainees whether anyone was sick or not feeling well. No one put up his hand. But there was a trainee among the company, Recruit Tham W.K., who was down with flu but did not put up his hand.

Then the route march started. The platoons took turns to lead the company after each break during the route march. Sometimes, the pace of the march became too hot for some trainees, who could not keep pace and had to fall out. They became stragglers and had to be picked up by a few instructors walking at the rear of the company. The landrover with the medical orderly was also supposed to be at the rear.

Somehow, Tham fell out and managed to slip out of view by taking cover in the forest. He was not to be seen alive again.

During subsequent rest breaks, there were head-counts. He was presumed to be with the medical orderly. It was only in the evening after the route march, when the the rifles were due to be returned to the armoury, that they realised Tham was missing. They went to the medical centre but he was not there. The instructors feared the worst. Overnight, they organised a night-search party for him, re-tracing the 16-Km route taken earlier in the day. They could not find him.

The next day, the entire Camp I ceased training and batches of instructors and trainees were dispatched to find Tham. It was only about 5 p.m. that his own platoon commander (PC) found his corpse. Near a forest track junction, the PC noticed a half-pictched tent. He called out but there was no response. As he neared the tent, he noticed many flies buzzing around and detected a foul stench. There lay before him his dead trainee, lying with one hand holding his rifle and the other hand outstretched with a water bottle, with its cover opened. The PC broke down in tears and wept openly.

(A subsequent post-mortem showed that Tham had apparently died of stomach rupture. When his body system was still hot from the heat of the route march, against the advice of instructors, he had apparently gulped down massive amounts of water suddenly. It was like pouring ice cubes into a thin glass of hot water, which can cause the glass to crack. But the post mortem also found puncture marks on his body, which could not be satisfactorily explained to this day.)

It was left to the Company Sergeant Major and his landrover driver to drive the corpse back to camp for transfer to the mortuary. It was twilight at that time. Inexplicably, the engine could not start. The thought of the two of them spending the night with the corpse unnerved them. But eventually, they somehow had the engine started and returned safely to base.

The late Tham was promoted to NCO and cremated at Mount Vernon with full military honours. As the company trainees lined the road snaking up to the crematorium to salute our late comrade, it was a heart-breaking sight to see a distraught mother being supported by two daughters following the hearse.

A few instructors returned to the site where he departed from this world, to offer incense and prayers. One instructor asked the late Tham not to come back and haunt us, but rather to express his last wishes in a dream so that his soul could rest in peace after his wishes were fulfilled.

But Tham did not listen.

Incident 1: One of the instructors came to the Platoon 9 bunk to remove his personal effects. When he opened up his metal cupboard, there was a foul stench from inside that could not be explained.

Incident 2: In the dead of the night, some trainees of Charlie Company heard Tham’s voice shouting for the platoon or company to fall in at the common company compound.

Incident 3 (more scary): One of the platoon 9 section mates woke up in the middle of the night and saw the white figure of Tham’s ghost standing in front of his former cupboard ! He bolted to the next double-decker bed, grabbed to share his blanket and said “ghost!” The next morning, the platoon mates could see two trainees pale and ashened by the encounter.

Incident 4: During one of the subsequent route marches (by Golf Company), the company noticed a figure of a soldier in full battle order standing in the distance among some trees. The OC (a former Commando Captain) dashed forward to take a closer look. He quickly ordered the whole company to double past without slowing down to see what he saw. Subsequent route marches were diverted to avoid that area of sighting.

It’s been a long time since I last set foot on Pulau Tekong in June 1983. But I heard that the bunk in which the late Tham used was converted into a lecture room and subsequently into a store room. The room was installed with padlocked doors for obvious reasons.

Over the years, generations of trainees who became instructors passed down their version of Tham’s story by word of mouth, which unfortunately got distorted in the process.

May his soul rest in peace."

It was really heart breaking that I wasn't of any help to the team at all

I could not do a simple passing

My attack was not effective as before

Even my defense was terrible

Using the word "lousy" to describe myself is just an insult to the vocab

I have let my teammates who had been trusting me so much down

A father's Message From Beyond The Grave

Ever wondered what it is like to have Death staring straight in your eyes? Is there anything you will like to do or change before you draw your last breath? What if you have a family with young children and perhaps some precious time left? What would you do?

Here’s a sad but true story to be shared, about a loving dad and husband, who did what he could in the little time he was left for his family. From their country cottage filled with memories of Mandy Flanagan’s late husband Paul, she shared with us their story.

Paul, a teacher, who died of cancer at the age of 45 in November 2009, passionately believed his children, Thomas and Lucy, should have more than just fading photographs to remember him by. For the children were only five and one-and-half years old at the time of his passing. “There was nothing more important to Paul than being the best father he could be,” says Mandy.

“When he knew he was dying, there was no time for self-pity. He became absolutely focused on doing whatever he could to continue being a good dad to them throughout the years, even though he wouldn’t be here in person.”

Amongst his preparation included letters, filmed messages, future birthday presents and his personal chest of favorite books. “Each book is accompanied by a note to Thomas and Lucy explaining why Paul loved it, and how much he hopes they will too when they’re old enough to read it,” explains Mandy.

But perhaps all these gifts pales in comparison to a document titled “On finding fulfillment”, accidentally discovered on his laptop by Mandy. “I opened it and, with tears rolling down my cheeks, I discovered his bullet-pointed code to living a good and happy life,” says Mandy. And this list of 28 instructions was the very way Paul lived his life.

Addressing his children who were too young to understand the tragedy that was unfolding, Paul writes, ”In these last few weeks, following my terminal diagnosis, I have searched my soul and heart to find ways in which I can reach out to you as you grow up.

“I’ve been thinking about the matters in life that are important, and the values and aspirations that make people happy and successful. In my view, and you may well have your own ideas by now, the formula is pretty simple.

“The three most important virtues are: Loyalty, integrity and moral courage. If you aspire, friends will respect you, employers will retain you, and your father will be immensely proud of you. I am therefore giving you several pieces of advice. These are the principles on which I have tried to build my life and they are exactly those that I would have encouraged you to embrace, had I been able to.” “I love you very much. Never forget that.”

“He also wrote that they should never give up, and he certainly never did. He fought so bravely, so courageously, right to the end.”

Having been first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2004, where a birthmark on his chest had become malignant. The cancer was removed in November that year when their son Thomas was only a few months old. And after years of regular follow-ups, he was given the all clear in January 2008 when Mandy was expecting Lucy.

However a swelling that appears in May 2008 proved the cancer had spread to his lymph glands in his arms and neck shortly after. Even surgery and radiotherapy was not able to halt its progression. By March 2009, the cancer had spread to his brain and his condition was terminal.

“He never pitied himself,” says Mandy. “The diagnosis, and perhaps the drugs he was on, triggered a sort of mania. He suddenly had so much energy. While I lay awake upstairs worrying, Paul would work through the nights, determined to get his affairs in order.”

Having meticulously organized the family finances, arranged his own funeral, buying presents for their children, their dining room was soon filled piles of shoeboxes filled with paperwork, hand-written letters and DVD messages for his family and friends.

With Lucy christened last summer, she now has one godmother and nine godfathers. “He wanted his friends to have a permanent tie to his family, I think,” says Mandy. “And if Lucy couldn’t have her father, a fantastic team of godfathers was the very least she deserved.”

With his passing at home, some eight months after his terminal diagnosis, Mandy was certain he’ll be able to rest peacefully knowing that he had left the best legacy any father could. “When some people are told they have just a few months to live, they decide their life won’t be complete until they’ve bungee-jumped off Sydney Harbor Bridge or seen the Grand Canyon. But that wasn’t Paul. All that was important to him was right here. He lived and died by his own rules, and I know he had found his fulfillment.”

We all have a finite amount of time in this world, some less than others. And it is not the amount of time, rather how we use it which truly matters. Ever so often we get absorbed by our daily rat race and tend to take our loved ones for granted. Perhaps it is time we slow down and re-examine ourselves before it is too late.

A FATHER'S RULES FOR FINDING FULFILLMENT

Be courteous, be punctual, always say please and thank you, and be sure to hold your knife and fork properly. Others take their cue on how to treat you from your manners.

Be kind, considerate and compassionate when others are in trouble, even if you have problems of your own. Others will admire your selflessness and will help you in due course.

Show moral courage. Do what is right, even if that makes you unpopular. I always thought it important to be able to look at myself in the shaving mirror every morning and not feel guilt or remorse. I depart this world with a pretty clear conscience.

Show humility. Stand your ground but pause to reflect on what the other side are saying, and back off when you know you are wrong. Never worry about losing face. That only happens when you are pig-headed.

Learn from your mistakes. You will make plenty so use them as a learning tool. If you keep making the same mistake or run into a problem, you’re doing something wrong.

Avoid disparaging someone to a third party; it is only you who will look bad. If you have a problem with someone, tell them face to face.

Hold fire! If someone crosses you, don’t react immediately. Once you say something it can never be taken back, and most people deserve a second chance.

Have fun. If this involves taking risks, so be it. If you get caught, hold your hands up.

Give to charity and help those who are less fortunate than yourselves: it’s easy and so rewarding.

Always look on the upside! The glass is half full, never half empty. Every adversity has a silver lining if you seek it out.

Make it your instinct always to say ‘yes’. Look for reasons to do something, not reasons to say no. Your friends will cherish you for that.

Be canny: you will get more of what you want if you can give someone more of what they desire. Compromise can be king.

Always accept a party invitation. You may not want to go, but they want you there. Show them courtesy and respect.

Never ever let a friend down. I would bury bodies for my friends, if they asked me to . . . which is why I have chosen them carefully.

Always tip for good service. It shows respect. But never reward poor service. Poor service is insulting.

Always treat those you meet as your social equal, whether they are above or below your station in life. For those above you, show due deference, but don’t be a sycophant.

Always respect age, as age equals wisdom.

Be prepared to put the interests of your sibling first.

Be proud of who you are and where you come from, but open your mind to other cultures and languages. When you begin to travel (as I hope you will), you’ll learn that your place in the world is both vital and insignificant. Don’t get too big for your breeches.

Be ambitious, but not nakedly so. Be prepared to back your assertions with craftsmanship and hard work.

Live every day to its full: do something that makes you smile or laugh, and avoid procrastination.

Give of your best at school. Some teachers forget that pupils need incentives. So if your teacher doesn’t give you one, devise your own.

Always pay the most you can afford. Never skimp on hotels, clothing, shoes, make-up or jewellery. But always look for a deal. You get what you pay for.

Never give up! My two little soldiers have no dad, but you are brave, big-hearted, fit and strong. You are also loved by an immensely kind and supportive team of family and friends. You make your own good fortune, my children, so battle on.

Never feel sorry for yourself, or at least don’t do it for long. Crying doesn’t make things better.

Look after your body and it will look after you.

Learn a language, or at least try. Never engage a person abroad in conversation without first greeting them in their own language; by all means ask if they speak English!

And finally, cherish your mother, and take very good care of her.

新加坡排球公開賽

太開心了
這一路走過來眞的好不容易
在一起打了八年的球
进了五次决賽
算是很不錯的成績吧
哈哈！
最終最開心的事是在决賽遇到之前在國家队的队友們
虽然大家的技术都稍微有差
可是能再一起比賽和對抗
那才是最有意义和最興奋的事
希望明年還能繼續卫冕
从國少到現在
我們在一起整整打了九年的球

一群瘋子在一起的時候就是會做出傻事

It was a fantastically fight against the HC boys
Though we lost 3 sets to zero to them
The Nanyang's Spirit never die!
The moment I stepped into the sports hall
I saw the volleyballers and supporters from NYJC
I felt a sense of belonging again!

Indeed it brought back the sweet memories to me
Still remember the days when we had only outdoor courts in school
We had to use the indoor court from PHS, Sembawang Sec and Dunman Sec to train
'Cos Shen Jiao Lian was still coaching in those schools then
Remember every Saturdays the seniors would come back and play with us
Then dinner at the coffee shop outside the school
We would order our favourite fried rice with egg from the Tze Cha store
Then we would head to McDonald in Serangoon Central for drinks and chit chat
Waited to catch the last bus home from the bus interchange
Time really flies...

I miss those days
When we were still young and carefree
I miss the training from Shen Jiao Lian
I miss the outdoor court when we would lie down and look at the stars at night
I miss the old PE Dept when we would hide in there after training
I miss the track when we were told to run every after Saturday's training
I miss the seniors
I miss the jokes we had and burst into laughter
then everybody in the Mac started to have their eyes on us

A wave of nostalgia just hit on me
How I wish I could turn the time back and return to the past

I wonder how is everyone now...

B boys played their first match against Victoria School today

I'm actually quite impressed by them
It was a shame that they lost 1-2 with a close fight of
26-24, 18-25, 22-25
A few crucial points were lost due to the poor judgement of the referees
But they can't be blamed as no lines men were provided
However
I can see that my team has "grown up" a lot with me this 2 years
The way they play was quite mature in a way
No longer like little kids playing ball
This is what I call the real volleyball game
Teamwork
Faith
Blieve
Trust
And the hunger of wanting to win!
I'm sure with another year of hard work
They will be able to see the fruits that they bear soon

But for C boys...
It was kinda disappointing to see the way they play against Dunman Sec
Nothing much to comment about them
All I hope is that they will be able to see the light soon

Never felt so sick for a long long time already

Headache...cough...fever...
Looks like I have to stop all the strenuous activities for a while
To let my body recuperate
This is so not me...
I hate to stay in the room and do nothing for the whole day
I need a work up!!!
Gym! Gym! Gym!
I really hate to fall sick
Whenever I fall sick
My body weight will drop and I seriously hate it
It's so hard for me to maintain at 70kg
I guess I have dropped at least 2-3kg these few days
Dammit!!!

I need an antidote now

I thought I could adapt to a new team easily but then I was wrong
I felt like a bozo on the court today
Was kinda lost throughout the two sets against Volleysport
And I felt pressurized too

Is it because Peihui knows the weakness in me?

Or is it because I'm playing against my former team
That's why I'm not able to perform well?

But no matter what

I know I shouldn't be affected by all these factors
As a matured and senior player
I have been to many overseas competitions
All the experiences that I have gained
Should be able to help me to overcome all the pressure in me

God
I pray for your help
Please give me confidence to pick myself up from where I fall each time
I know you will make me a stronger person in time to come =]

Finally 2009 has come to an end
It has been a really terrible year for me
Lotsa failures and unhappiness
I'm just feeling so sad that I'm no longer the one
Celebrating all the special occasions with you
13 long months...
But my heart still misses you so badly
Can you even feel it?
I really feel like dying at times
Living in this world without you is just like the sky without the sun
I know you will find me being childish for saying all these
But I'm really living in hell...
I feel so miserable everyday
When I have to walk pass the places we had been to before

Those memories just keep freshing their way back to my head

Went on a short trip to HongKong to look for some friends

Roller Coaster Mood

"Roller coaster" mood for the past few weeks...
No wonder people would say that life's like a roller coaster ride
It's always full of ups and downs
Especially emotionally

First of all...
Police won the Singapore Open Cup, again, this year
2 years consecutively, not bad
I was the MVP for the whole competition
MVP = Most Valuable Player
So what??!!
It sounds funny, but really, I don't find myself "valuable" at all! =(
I think I played rather badly during the final
Due to many many unhappiness things that happened
Nonetheless, I appreciate the support from my brothers, Kunhan and Chong Wan
And not forgetting Jonas and Weijie too
I'm happy that Chong Wan agreed to play for us this year
But then he won't be joining us next year...sad! =(

Next we celebrated Raymond's birthday at Bugis
A small celebration at some beef noodle restaurant
Hope he like it.

The night started quite emo for some reason
Later part when everyone got quite high and drunk
All the emo-ness were gone
Only talking nonsense and more drinking!! LOLx~
I puke a few times though
Luckily noone saw that merlion scene. heh! =p

It was held at Temasek Poly Sports Hall
YES! TP Sports Hall!
It's quite unusual but then again
The atmosphere was there
Everyone was supposed to wear sports attire to attend the wedding
